Meaning

Who can make us fall now? O harsh karmas, stop coming to press down on us and make the pain of birth cling to our bodies! One has come and stands here today who will drag you far away. He is the young shoot of our clan, of Kurugur, ringed by rich farmland full of young conches.

Explanation

Kambar threatens the karmas directly; it is a bold verse. We fear karma as something no one escapes. But once the Alvar's grace has come, everything changes: now it is the karmas that must be afraid.

The words 'stands here today' matter. Grace is not a dream of the future; it has come and stands at our side today, now.

Srimad Bhagavatam, Book 6

The Messengers of Vishnu Who Saved Ajamila

From the Srimad Bhagavatam. In his youth Ajamila was a virtuous brahmin. Later he fell into evil ways, abandoned his family and duties, and lived by theft and deceit. He had ten sons; the youngest was named Narayana, and Ajamila loved that little boy dearly.

When his time to die came, three terrible messengers of Yama arrived with ropes in their hands. In terror Ajamila cried out to his son, who was playing some distance away: 'Narayana!'

At that very moment the messengers of Vishnu appeared and stopped Yama's messengers. 'He is a sinner,' said Yama's men. 'Even unknowingly, he has spoken the Lord's holy name, and that atones for every sin,' said Vishnu's messengers, and drove them off. Spared, Ajamila changed his life, did penance on the bank of the Ganga, and reached God. It is with this certainty that Kambar says, 'O karmas, one has come who will drag you away.'

Remember a time when someone's arrival in a hard moment made you feel, 'Now I have nothing to fear.'
