Meaning

Separating the true as true and the false as false, the real means of salvation has come to me. When? Only after I gave my single-minded love to him alone: the king of Kurugai, the truthful one rich in learning, master of the sword of truth that cuts away the karmas that cling to us.

Explanation

Telling the true from the false is not easy, and the intellect alone cannot do it. Kambar says the clarity came only after he loved the Alvar. Love guides understanding.

'To him alone, a single love' matters. Not love scattered in many places, but whole love given to one. That focused love is the 'means'.

Valmiki Ramayana, Yuddha Kanda

Vibhishana's Surrender

From the Valmiki Ramayana. Again and again Vibhishana advised his brother Ravana to return Sita to Rama. Ravana insulted him and drove him out. Vibhishana crossed the sea with four companions, stood in the sky and declared: 'I take refuge in Rama, the refuge of all the worlds.'

Sugriva and the others were suspicious: 'He is the enemy's brother; he may be a spy.' Only Hanuman saw the truth in his face. Then Rama spoke his vow: 'To one who comes to me even once and says, 'I am yours', I give freedom from fear of every being. This is my vow. Even if Ravana himself came, I would accept him.'

Vibhishana was accepted, and was crowned king of Lanka even before the war began. Leaving falsehood and holding to truth, surrendering with whole trust to one alone, became his way to salvation.
