Guruparampara tradition (Life of Andal)The Girl Who Wore the Garland First
From Vaishnava tradition. At Srivilliputhur, Periyalvar found a baby girl beneath a tulasi plant, named her Kodhai and raised her. Every day he wove garlands for the Lord of the temple.
As Kodhai grew into a young woman, she fell in love with God. Without her father's knowledge she would put on the garland he had made, look at her reflection in the well water and ask, 'Am I a bride fit for the Lord?' One day Periyalvar found a long hair in the garland; grieved, he wove a fresh one that day. That night the Lord appeared in his dream and said, 'The garland she wore first is the one I love.'
Kodhai became Andal. She sang, 'If there is talk of giving me to a mortal man, I will not live.' In the end, at Srirangam, she merged with Ranganatha. Kambar sees this story of a young girl melting for God alone in the heroine of this verse.
