Srimad Bhagavatam, Book 10, Chapter 89Bhrigu Tests the Three Gods
From the Srimad Bhagavatam. When sages were holding a sacrifice on the bank of the Sarasvati, a question arose: 'Of Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu, who is the highest?' To find out, they sent the sage Bhrigu.
Bhrigu first went to his own father Brahma and stood without bowing. Brahma grew angry but held it in, since Bhrigu was his son. Next he went to Kailasa; when Shiva came to embrace him with love, Bhrigu pushed him away. Shiva raised his trident in anger, and Parvati stopped him. Last, Bhrigu went to Vaikuntha. There Vishnu lay asleep with his head in the lap of Sri, and Bhrigu kicked him on the chest.
Vishnu rose, bowed to Bhrigu and stroked his foot, asking, 'O sage, did your tender foot not hurt when it struck my hard chest? This chest your foot has touched will now be Sri's lasting home.' The Bhagavatam says Bhrigu returned to the sages in tears and told them: 'The one full of patience and love is the Supreme.'
