Meaning

While there is still time, go to Kurugur and take hold of him! At the end of the age, the one who slept on the banyan leaf held all things within him. They sprout again in a form that became twofold, the conscious and the unconscious, and put forth shoots and grow. Our divine one, the Alvar, kindled the wisdom by which souls pass beyond the three gunas and go to the Root of all.

Explanation

The verse opens with an urgent call: 'while there is time'. Life does not last; do not put off holding to the Alvar.

Then comes a vast cosmic picture: at the end of the age all things withdraw into God, and they come forth again as a seed sprouts. The wisdom the Alvar gave shows the way out of that endless cycle to the Root itself. With this verse the fourth decad ends.

Srimad Bhagavatam, Book 12, Chapter 9

Markandeya and the Child on the Banyan Leaf

From the Srimad Bhagavatam. The sage Markandeya did penance for a very long time. He asked Narayana for one boon: 'Let me see your maya.'

One evening, as he worshipped on the riverbank, a great wind suddenly rose and heavy rain fell. The oceans swelled and drowned the whole world. For ages Markandeya wandered alone in that flood. Then, in the middle of the endless waters, he saw a small banyan tree. On one of its leaves lay a beautiful dark child, sucking his toe.

As Markandeya drew near, he was drawn in with the child's breath into its belly. There he saw the whole world: sky, oceans, mountains, cities, his own hermitage, and himself. When the child breathed out, he fell back into the flood. The moment he reached out to embrace the child, it vanished, and he was in his own hermitage again. Kambar recalls in this verse the one who, at the end of the age, holds all things within him and sleeps on a banyan leaf.
