Explanation

The wording of this verse is rather difficult, and the commentators therefore give different explanations. One: for those skilled in the liberty that will not listen to others' talk of a friend's fault, a friend's lapse on some day does not affect them. Another: such people will count the day on which a friend did wrong as a day lost from their own lives and grieve. In either case the central point is refusing to hear gossip about the friend's fault.

Backbiting between friends is the greatest enemy of friendship. When someone comes and complains about our friend, many of us listen eagerly. But a person with true familiarity will refuse to listen at all. He will speak about the friend directly to the friend; he will not hear his faults in his absence.

In today's world, on social media everyone speaks of everyone. Not lending ear to talk behind a friend's back is a protection of friendship. Even if the friend really has a fault, to settle it by talking to him lovingly is the way of old friendship. This is the central idea of the verse.

The refusal to listen is itself an act of loyalty. It tells the friend, without a word, that his name is safe in our keeping. A friend who knows this will find it easier to confess his faults to us, and so the faults are more likely to be corrected.

A story

The Friend Who Would Not Listen to Gossip

In a village near Tirunelveli, Karuppasamy served as temple priest. He had a childhood friend named Mariappan. The two had grown up together. One day talk spread in the village that Mariappan had made a small error in the donation accounts for the temple festival.

Some people came to Karuppasamy and eagerly began saying, "Your friend Mariappan has cheated in the accounts." Karuppasamy stopped them. "Stop. I will not listen to talk against him in his absence. If there is anything, I will ask him myself face to face," he said.

That evening Karuppasamy met Mariappan. Without making any accusation he asked, "Shall we look at the accounts together?" Mariappan, shaken, said, "Have you come to know?" There truly was a small error in the accounts; pressed by want in his family, he had taken a small sum.

Karuppasamy added that sum to the accounts from his own money. He said to Mariappan, "Do not do this again. If you need something, ask me." His heart was heavy all that day; he felt that the day his friend erred was a day lost from his life.

The next day there was a festival feast at the temple. Karuppasamy seated Mariappan beside him and served him. The townspeople saw it and said, "They are inseparable friends." Without knowing what had happened inside, they honoured that friendship.

The villagers never came to know of the incident. Mariappan was grateful to that friendship all his life. Karuppasamy protected his name and also corrected his fault.

To reflect on

When someone speaks ill of a friend in his absence, do you listen, change the subject, or walk away?
