Explanation

This verse points to the unwisdom of not keeping a secret. 'Arumarai' is a precious secret to be guarded; it may be political, family or business. 'Sorum' means to let out through carelessness or by slip. When the unwise man carelessly lets it out, the result returns upon himself as great punishment, says Valluvar. 'Perumirai' is a great penalty or burden.

One who has divulged a secret not only brings pain to others but loses trust himself. No one will place trust in him again. Important news will stop being told to him. He will be isolated. This is the penalty he inflicts on himself.

The verse applies strongly to those in responsible posts like ministers. One who reveals the counsels of the state puts the state and country in danger. Even today, guarding business secrets, customers' private data and the trust a friend has given decides a person's reliability.

What can we do? Before releasing news, to ask 'Who benefits from my saying this? Who is harmed?' To think of a secret shared with us not as a burden but as a trust. At times silence is the best knowledge.

The power to stop words is a mark of sense; their overflowing is a mark of its lack.

A story

The Palace Secret

In a small kingdom the king prepared a special plan to make a peace treaty with an enemy state. The plan was known only to three ministers and a young scribe, Velu. Velu was a careful writer but one who, once he opened his mouth, did not know how to stop talking.

One evening Velu was having tea in the market with a friend. The friend asked, 'What is new in the palace today?' To show his importance, Velu said carelessly, 'Don't you know? The king has drawn up a secret plan with the enemy state.' He even told a few details.

That friend was a relative of an enemy spy. The news reached them. The enemy's forces strengthened their position before the treaty. The king's plan failed. When the king inquired, it was found that the secret had leaked through Velu.

Velu lost his post. No one trusted him afterwards. He regretted his error. A few words spoken for a small vanity changed his whole life.

The old minister of that place told him, 'Arumarai sorum arivilaan seyyum perumirai thaane thanakku,' and added, 'Better than telling is not telling.'

Later Velu became a teacher in a village and taught children the habit of keeping secrets as the first lesson. Guiding others from his own error somewhat redeemed him. Once a word has left the mouth it cannot be drawn back.
