Explanation

This verse describes one with two defects. One: he does not do even when others instruct him. Two: he does not himself discern. A man with both will not come to the good path by any route. The one who listens to advice gains from others' knowledge; the one who examines by himself gains from his own knowledge. One who has neither can gain nothing.

'Avvuyir poo-om alavum or noi' means he is a disease until his life leaves. To say he is a disease points to the continuing trouble he gives to himself and to those around him. His family members grow weary because he does not accept help.

Commentators explain it just as 'neither acts when told nor knows himself'. This is a form of obstinacy. Obstinacy may seem strength, but really it shuts the door of learning.

In today's life those who do not follow dietary rules though the doctor says so, who do not study though the teacher says so, and who do not change though the experienced say so are of this kind. Those who want to help them grow tired. So we must see whether this tendency is in us too.

The remedy is simple: to grow both a mind that examines and accepts advice and the habit of thinking by oneself.

A story

Dhritarashtra and Vidura

In the Mahabharata, Dhritarashtra is the best example of a man who would not take advice. He was a king without eyesight. His younger brother Vidura was excellent in dharma. Whenever Dhritarashtra's son Duryodhana began to do harm to the Pandavas, Vidura advised his elder brother to restrain him.

Before the dice game Vidura said, 'Brother, this game will split the family; stop it.' Sanjaya, Bhishma, Drona and Gandhari also gave advice separately. Gandhari told him directly, 'Cast him off, and the family will survive.'

Dhritarashtra heard all this. His heart knew it to be true. But because of his affection for his son he did not act on it. Nor did he himself decide what was right. He did not act though told, and he did not himself discern.

In the end all his hundred sons died in the Kurukshetra war. After the war Dhritarashtra sank in deep grief. Vidura and Sanjaya then consoled him. Many explain his grief as blindness that came not of his eyes but of his decisions.

Dhritarashtra's life proves the truth of the verse 'evavum seykalaan thaan theraan avvuyir poom alavumor noi'. He became a disease to himself, to his family and to a kingdom.

The bitter lesson of this tale is that when love hides wisdom, it ceases to be love; it becomes blindness.
