Explanation

This verse speaks of the gift of a man of petty sense. When the unwise man gives of his own accord, happily, there is no other reason for it, Valluvar says; it is the penance, the merit, of the receiver. That is, he gives not out of wisdom or dharma but out of an unclear impulse. So it is only the good fortune of the recipient.

Here 'nenju vandhu eedhal' is a gift arising from a whim of the heart. That whim is not accompanied by enquiry. Without thinking who deserves, how much should be given and how it will be used, he gives. So it shows not the giver's wisdom but the receiver's good karma.

Some explain the verse differently. To receive a gift from an unwise man is a rare event, since he is not generally disposed to give; so if he gives willingly, it is the receiver's merit. In any case, it brings the giver no credit.

In life today, wise giving is to know the deserving, to know the need and to give in proper measure. Giving out of emotional impulse or for fame most often turns out useless or reaches the wrong people. Giving is a great virtue, but it needs the help of sense.

So before giving, to pause for a moment and ask 'will this truly be of use?' is wise charity.

A story

The Rich Youth Who Gave Without Looking

In a temple town a young man named Anandan received great wealth after his father's death. He was good-hearted but without worldly experience. On a Shivaratri night he distributed his wealth lavishly to the beggars seated at the temple gate. He did not examine who was truly hungry and who was pretending.

There an elderly widow, truly poor, was waiting for her daughter's wedding. She too stood in the line. A gold coin from Anandan fell into her hand. 'This is the grace of God,' she said and bowed. Her daughter's wedding was accomplished.

That same night a gambler standing at the temple's edge also received money. He lost it in gambling that very night. Another beggar spent what he got on drink. Anandan did not know who benefited and who wasted.

Seeing this, the village's old teacher told him, 'Son, you gave out of good will, but what that widow received was her own good fortune. Had you given knowing the deserving, many more would have benefited.' Anandan understood.

From the next year he set up a fund for charity, made village elders an advisory committee, and began to help needy families he knew of. Giving with knowledge of merit brought him joy too.

Thus the truth of the verse 'arivilaan nenju vandhu eedhal pirithu yaadhum illai peruvaan thavam' remained in the villagers' memory, and also that when sense joins giving, it blossoms into dharma.

Anandan kept the blessing of that widow as the memory of his life, but he did not forget that it came not by his wisdom but by her merit.
