Explanation

The opening word of the verse is 'manaivizhaivaar'. Commentators take it to mean those who love their wives beyond measure, or those who put the pleasures of home life first. Either way, what is blamed here is not love but excessive craving and the forgetting of duty that follows it. We should read this verse remembering that Valluvar elsewhere praises married life and the wife in the highest terms.

'Maanpayan' is a noble fruit: righteousness, renown and rare achievement. A man who turns his whole attention to pleasure will have neither the time nor the energy to move towards such fruits. The energy of a life is limited, and how we spend it decides what we achieve.

The second half says that those who desire great action regard such unbounded desire as something not to be wished for. This is a useful measure. The larger a person's aim, the more he orders his desires.

In today's life it is easy to apply. The love and joy of family are necessary. But shrinking into a single circle, neglecting work, learning, service to society and the search of the spirit, holds back growth. A life is whole only when love and duty are in balance.

A story

Rambola Becomes Tulsidas

This is a traditional tale about the life of Tulsidas, told widely in North India.

In his youth Tulsidas was called Rambola. He loved his wife Ratnavali beyond measure. One day Ratnavali had gone to her father's house. Unable to bear a single day without her, he set out that very night.

On the way a river was flooded and no boatman was to be found. Tradition says he caught hold of something floating, thinking it a log, and crossed the river, and only later found it was a corpse. When he tried to climb the wall of the house, he took a hanging snake for a rope and climbed by it, the story adds.

Ratnavali was astonished to see her husband standing there after all these hardships. She said sadly, "You have so much attachment to this body of flesh and bone. If you had even half this love for the Lord Rama, you would have crossed the ocean of birth itself."

Those words went into his heart like lightning. That very night he turned the course of his life. He left home and went to holy places including Kashi. He did penance, immersed in the name of Rama. The epic he later composed, the Ramacharitamanasa, is sung in countless homes to this day.

Unbounded attachment had drawn him through dangerous paths in the middle of the night. When the same force turned towards a high ideal, it bloomed into a world-famous poem. The tale shows that when desire is directed to the right purpose, life reaches its noble fruit.
