Explanation

In this verse Valluvar begins with 'nattaar kuraimudiyaar'. Friendship, in his view, is a very high relationship. When a friend is in trouble, to meet his need is the duty of friendship. But the man who changes all his decisions to suit another's wishes cannot guard the needs of his friends. The fault here is not the wife's wish, but that he lets go of his own duty to his friends.

'Nandru aatraar' means those who do no good. The inner sense is that one who does not help friends will not help other good people either. The helping mind is a habit, and if it dims in one place, it begins to dim in others.

'Nannuthalaal' is a conventional epithet from old poetry for a woman's beauty. Here beauty is painted as an attraction and as a spell in which a man forgets duty. 'Pettaangu ozhugubavar' means those who act as she wishes. The important point is that they act without examining what is good and what is bad.

In truth a good wife encourages her husband to help his friends. Valluvar holds that the glory of the household lies in hospitality and help. So the verse distinguishes between loving advice and thoughtless obedience.

Today we can apply it to any relationship. People who escape by saying, 'They will not like it at home,' or 'The office will not agree,' when a friend is in distress lose friendship. The responsibility of taking our own decision, knowing the value of friendship, is what protects us.

A story

Kuchela and Krishna

This tale of friendship is told in the Bhagavata Purana. Here a loving wife reminds her husband of his duty to a friend.

The brahmin called Kuchela, or Sudama, lived in poverty. He had studied with Krishna in the gurukula of the sage Sandipani, and the two were inseparable friends there. Later Krishna became the king of Dwaraka. Kuchela struggled in poverty in his village.

His wife Susheela was very wise. Seeing the children wasting with hunger she said to her husband, "Is not the king of Dwaraka your friend? Go to him and tell him our state." At first Kuchela hesitated. "Ask a friend for help? And how can I go empty-handed to a king?" he said.

Susheela begged a little beaten rice from the neighbouring houses, tied it in an old cloth, and gave it to her husband, saying, "At least give him this with love." Kuchela listened to her, and by his own heart too decided, and set out for Dwaraka.

In the palace, Krishna ran to meet Kuchela as soon as he saw him and embraced him. With his queen Rukmini, he washed the guest's feet and honoured him. When Kuchela hesitantly held out the bundle of rice, Krishna took it eagerly and ate.

Kuchela returned without asking for anything. But when he reached his village, a mansion full of wealth stood where his hut had been.

In this story Kuchela's wife encouraged her husband towards the duty of friendship, and Kuchela went with courage, trusting his friend. In the state Valluvar warns against, a husband abandons his friendship. Here home life and friendship stand as helpers of each other.
