Explanation

The phrase 'thaazhndha iyalbu' needs to be understood correctly. Respecting one's wife and talking things over with her is no lowering; it is a fine rule of married life. What Valluvar condemns here is the lack of manliness that loses all self-regard and clarity and looks at another's face for every decision. The fault, in other words, is not in the wife but in the husband who has lost his footing.

There is something to notice in 'nallaarul naanuth tharum'. The good are those with sound judgement and conduct. Before such people a man feels shame when he cannot fulfil his duty. Shame is a warning from our own conscience, and the one who listens to it mends himself.

The word 'enjnaandrum', always, is important. This shame is not for a day or two. It continues. Once someone gives up his self-respect, it becomes a habit and follows him through life.

Shame is in a way a healthy feeling. It makes us aware of our state and urges us to mend it. In present life, consultation within the family is necessary. But to avoid responsibility where decisions must be taken is a shortcoming. A good husband and a good wife will respect and consult each other, and each will also take on the responsibility of his or her share.

A story

Subbaiyar the Temple Trustee

This is an imagined tale set in the life of a Tamil village temple.

Subbaiyar was the trustee of the Perumal temple in a village near Kumbakonam. He was a good man and well educated, but he hesitated to decide anything himself. For the temple accounts, the festival arrangements and the salary of the priest, he would go to his wife Parvathi and ask, "What do you say?" Parvathi was wise, and Subbaiyar went and repeated her words to the village exactly as she had said them.

Once, before the Purattasi festival, the village elders met. They debated whether to renovate the temple hall or expand the free feeding. All asked for Subbaiyar's view. He hesitated. "I will ask at home and tell you tomorrow," he said.

That night an elder of the village spoke to him quietly. "Subbaiyar, consulting is good. But you are the trustee. The village gave you this responsibility. If you fetch the decision from your house every time, how will the village trust you?" The words pricked him. He felt his standing fall.

Back home he told Parvathi of his trouble. She smiled and said, "I understand your love. But take my advice as one more help, and I will respect the decision you reach by your own thought. I do not want the burden of making the decision. I want to see you stand on your own understanding."

At the meeting next day Subbaiyar spoke clearly. He said it was better to postpone the hall renovation and expand the free feeding first, and he showed the cost worked out. The villagers happily agreed.

From then on the village respected him more than before. He did not give up seeking counsel at home, but he took the responsibility of decision himself. That brought him honour among the good.
