Explanation

The previous verse said that fear spoils the capacity for action. This verse shows another side: fear also prevents good deeds. The doubling in 'anjuvaan anjum' deserves notice. One who is fearful by nature does not stop at fearing one matter. The fear takes hold of his whole mind, and so he hesitates even to help the good.

'Nallaarkku nalla seyal' is the good done to good people: a teacher, a poor man, a monk, a friend. Though he knows what good has to be done, a man afraid of 'what they will say at home' leaves it undone. Once the time has gone, that opportunity does not return.

We should not read this verse alone. We should read it with the chapters on hospitality, pleasant speech and benevolence in the household section, where Valluvar says that a husband and wife honouring guests together is the best home life. So the fault is not in the wife, but in the husband who lacks the courage to turn his good attitude into action.

Even today many people fail to turn good intentions into deeds, and keep away from helping because of the hesitation, 'What will others think?' A true wish to do good becomes complete only when it joins with the courage to overcome fear.

A story

Yajnavalkya and Maitreyi

This conversation is told in the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad. It can be taken as the opposite of the state that Valluvar warns against: an example of a good partnership in the home.

Yajnavalkya was a renowned sage in the court of Janaka, king of Mithila. He had two wives, Maitreyi and Katyayani. Maitreyi was eager for wisdom, and Katyayani was attentive to household matters.

One day Yajnavalkya decided to give up household life and take up renunciation. He told his wives of the decision clearly. He neither hid it nor feared to say it. "I will divide my wealth equally between you," he said.

Then Maitreyi put a question to him: "Lord, if this entire earth were full of wealth and were mine, could I become immortal by it?" He said, "No; your life would be like the life of those who have wealth. There is no immortality through wealth."

Maitreyi said firmly, "What shall I do with that which does not give immortality? Tell me what you know." Yajnavalkya was delighted. "You have always been dear to me, and now you have spoken even dearer words," he said, and he explained the highest knowledge of the Self.

Here Yajnavalkya took his decision and told his wife without fear. Maitreyi stated her search for knowledge firmly. Each respected the other, and both sought the highest good. The tale shows that in a good home there is no place for fear, but there are understanding, respect and conversation.
