Explanation

In this verse Valluvar compares two kinds of persons: one is a man whose 'aanmai', manliness, goes no further than doing another's bidding, and the other is a woman of modesty and restraint. In this comparison he says the woman has the greater worth. There is a neat point in it. 'Aanmai' literally stands for courage and firmness. But a manliness that merely dances at another's word is not really manliness, and that is the hint in the verse.

'Naanudaip pen' is a woman who has the ornament of 'naan'. In the Tamil tradition 'naan' is not mere shyness, but the strength of mind that is ashamed to do wrong. By raising such a woman, Valluvar shows that firmness is the basis of worth. So this verse should not be taken as an insult to women. It praises the firmness that comes with a woman's sense of shame, and it criticises a man's lack of spirit.

Parimelazhagar and other commentators explain this verse as pointing to the weak state of a man's mind. One who does not stand on his own understanding and principle lacks worth.

Today we look with admiration at young women and men who do not act against their conscience whatever the pressure. Firmness in one's own principle is the sign of worth. One without it, however talented, becomes a puppet in the hands of others.

So the difference of man and woman is not the point here. What matters is the firmness to hold on to one's understanding and principle. That is worth, and that is esteem.

A story

The Boatman at Aadi Perukku

This is an imagined tale set on the bank of the Kaveri on the festival of Aadi Perukku.

A boatman called Muthu lived on the bank of the Kaveri. He was hardworking, but he used to nod to whatever anyone said. He lacked the courage to decide for himself. Whatever other boatmen at the ghat said, and whatever others said at home, he accepted. So he lived always in confusion.

The eighteenth day of the month of Aadi is Aadi Perukku, when the Kaveri runs high with new floods and families gather to worship Mother Kaveri. For boatmen it is a day of large earnings.

That morning at home, Muthu's wife Valli said anxiously, "We need extra income today to pay off our debt." He took that to heart and went to the landing. The crowd surged and pushed. "Load more people, get in!" shouted those on the bank. On one side was the desire for income, on the other the pressure of the crowd. Muthu, without thinking, loaded on more and more people.

His fourteen-year-old daughter Meena stood on the bank. She was a quiet girl who always brought her father his meal. Seeing the rim of the boat sinking close to the water, she came to him. "Father, this is enough. The flood is high. If you load more, the boat will not bear it," she said. Her voice was soft but firm.

The crowd shouted, but Meena stood before the boat with her arm out and let no one else in. "My father is responsible for your lives. I will not allow this," she said. Muthu bowed his head in shame. He saw that the clarity she had was not in him.

That day the boat crossed the river safely. From then on, whatever the pressure, Muthu made his decisions with his own understanding as the touchstone. His daughter's firmness became her father's teacher.
