This chapter describes how to assign suitable work to those who have been carefully chosen. Valluvar says to appoint those who know good from evil and are loving, wise, firm and free from greed, to watch the time, to empower them, and to supervise every day.

Introduction

The previous chapter, 'Therindhu Theliudhal', taught how to examine whom one can trust. 'Therindhu Vinaiyaadal' is its next step: it teaches which work to entrust to those chosen after examination, when, and how. 'Vinaiyaadal' means engaging people to do tasks. In today's language we might call it task assignment or human resource management.

That a person is trustworthy does not mean he suits every task. An honest man may not be good at accounts; a brave man may lack skill in administration. So the nature of the task and the nature of the worker must be compared and joined. This joining is the heart of the chapter.

The first verse asks us to appoint those who weigh good and evil and desire the good. The second asks us to give charge to one who increases revenue and brings prosperity. The third names four qualities: love, wisdom, clarity and freedom from greed. The fourth warns that even those who pass tests may change in action. The fifth says work must not be given merely out of affection. The sixth and seventh ask us to match person, task and time. The eighth asks us to make the chosen person worthy of the task. The ninth says that fortune leaves one who resents the friendship of a capable man. The tenth closes by saying the king must supervise every day.

The special quality of this chapter is that it sees people as people. Valluvar admits that even those who pass tests may change. So it is not enough to choose once; one must keep observing. At the same time he warns that one who, out of envy, dislikes the friendship of a worthy person will lose his own wealth.

The chapter shows that leadership has two duties. One is to place the right person in the right task. The other is to give him the support and authority he needs and to know every day what is happening. If either is missed, the work falls apart.

This knowledge applies fully to today's companies, schools and families. If in a family it is assigned by ability who keeps the accounts, who cooks and who teaches the children, the house stays peaceful. In an organisation, if each person is in a place suited to his talent, production grows. Valluvar said this two thousand years ago.

The chapter also gives us self-examination. If we learn what work we are suited for and develop ourselves in it, we too can receive responsibilities with confidence. The leader's choosing is one side; the worker's making himself ready is the other. Where the two meet, work flourishes.

Chapter story

The Pandavas' Duties in the Court of Virata

From the Mahabharata (Virata Parva): After twelve years of forest exile, the Pandavas had to spend one year in concealment, unrecognised by anyone. They decided to live hidden in the palace of Virata, king of Matsya. But what mattered most was to plan which work each should take in the king's household.

Yudhishthira joined as a brahmin named Kanka, the king's dice companion and counsellor. He was the man of dharma and also knew the subtleties of the dice. Bhima, under the name Vallabha, became cook and wrestler. His love of food and his strength suited that task.

Arjuna, in the form of a eunuch named Brihannala, became teacher of dance and music to the women of the inner palace. Earlier, because of Urvashi's curse, he was to take such a form for a year, and this became an aid to him. Nakula, as Granthika, tended the horses, in which he was expert. Sahadeva, as Tantripala, guarded the cows, being skilled in cattle care.

Draupadi joined as Sairandhri, maid to the queen. She knew well the art of adorning the queen. Thus all five took work that matched their nature and skill. For that reason they could work naturally and with confidence.

Through the whole year they were not recognised. Virata and the people respected them as excellent workers. When troubles like Kichaka's attack came, each handled them by his own skill. Because they joined the right person to the right task, the Pandavas' plan ended successfully.

This way of matching the nature of work with the nature of the worker is the practical form of 'therindhu vinaiyaadal'. The knowledge Valluvar calls 'idhanai idhanaal ivan mudikkum' the Pandavas arranged for themselves.

There is a subtlety in such assignment. One might think all tasks are not equally worthy, yet the Pandavas forgot their greatness and gladly accepted humble tasks like cooking, horses and cows. It shows that any work done with skill has dignity. A leader should assign tasks by fitness, without ranking them high or low.

Because each was engaged in his own work, no suspicion arose inside the palace. Yudhishthira spoke quietly with the king and pleased him. Bhima hid his strength in the kitchen. Arjuna won the affection of the women through music. Nakula and Sahadeva became known for care of horses and cows. All this was the fruit of matching work to person.

Later, when the Kauravas came to seize Virata's cattle, Arjuna revealed his true form and defeated them. At that moment he returned to his true work as an archer. Because each Pandava stayed in his task, they lived hidden; when the time came, they appeared with their real power.

The lesson of this tale is not only for leaders but for workers also. If we choose work that suits our nature and ability, our life becomes easier and those who trusted us benefit.
