Explanation

In this verse Valluvar likens the land to a wife. If a husband neglects her, the wife sulks and grieves. The land is the same, he says. 'Sellaan' means the one who does not go; the owner should go to his land and see it himself. For a man who only hands the land to labourers and sits at home, the land will not yield.

There is charm in the comparison: 'oodal', a lover's tiff, comes out of love. The land does not hate its owner; it is saddened because he does not come. When he comes and caresses it, it blooms again. This shows that the farmer's relation to the land is like that of husband and wife, full of love and attention.

The verse also tells us that any trade needs the owner's direct attention. A merchant who does not tend his shop daily, a teacher who does not spend time with students, a head of family who does not look after the household will find those relationships sulking in the same way. In modern times many lease out their lands and live abroad or in cities. The verse gives them a gentle reminder: as the affection of going to see the land in person lessens, the land's fertility lessens too.

A story

The Day the Owner Came

Rangasamy owned three acres near Tiruchi. He moved to Chennai for work and leased out the land. The tenant sent him a little paddy and money once a year. Rangasamy did not visit his land for five years.

One year he came to the village for Pongal in the month of Thai. He went to see his land. The bunds of the field were broken, the soil had hardened and weeds had overrun it. The neighbouring fields were green while his lay withered.

He asked the tenant, "Why is it so?" Hesitantly the tenant said, "Sir, I do not have full right to the land. I could not work with my whole heart on land without its owner. Because you did not come, the land too lost heart."

Rangasamy was stunned by the words. Seeing the state of his land, a guilty feeling rose in him. He bent down and picked up a handful of soil. It lay dry and stony. "Forgive me, land," he said.

From then on, one weekend each month Rangasamy came to the village, looked over the land and did some work himself. He sat with the tenant and planned. He began the ploughing with a bhoomi puja and the yoking of the plough.

In two years his land flourished again and rivalled the neighbouring fields. "The land's sulk is over," an elder said, laughing. Rangasamy agreed happily.

Valluvar's simile had come true in his life. He learned that day that the owner's footprints are the best manure for the land.
