Explanation

This verse shows the deep influence of farming through a striking example. Ascetics have left worldly life, set aside wealth and desire. It may seem they need no farming. But Valluvar says that if farmers fold their hands, even they have no food and their very basis of renunciation disappears. The form of the word 'kaimmadangin' is noteworthy. A farmer giving his labour rest and folding his hands may seem a small act. Yet that single act can shake the world. Valluvar conveys the effect of farming in the quietest words: everything lies in the movement of his hand.

In the Hindu tradition renunciation is a high state, but renunciants live by alms. The Upanishad says 'annam brahma', food is Brahman, meaning that food is the foundation of all beings. The life of the renunciant stands on the gift of food from householders, and the householders' food stands on the farmers' labour. So there is a continuous chain from renunciation to ploughing.

The point is that every high ideal rests on bodily life, and the farmer is the support of that life. Honouring farmers is therefore an act of knowledge and spirit too. On each day they do not fold their hands, the world is able to carry out its highest aims.

A story

An Ascetic in Drought

In a small ashram near Tiruvannamalai lived a renunciant, Swami Gnanananda. He had given up worldly desires; meditation and study were his life. The villagers near the ashram brought him food every day. 'I have no care for food; the world is my ashram,' he used to say.

One year a severe drought came. It did not rain at all. Wells dried up and fields cracked. The farmers could not touch the plough and had no means even to sow. Food ran short in the village. Within weeks, food stopped reaching the swami's ashram too.

On the first day he sat unruffled in meditation. On the second, hunger disturbed it. On the third he rose from the ashram and went to the village. There an old farmer stood weeping as he looked at his parched field.

"Sir, is there no food?" asked the swami. The farmer raised his head. "Swami, the sky has failed. I cannot touch my plough. My own children are hungry. What can I give you?" The swami stood speechless.

In that moment a truth dawned on him. The world he claimed to have renounced had in fact been supporting him through the farmer's hand. Now that the hand had folded, the very basis of his renunciation shook. He sat beside the farmer and wiped his tears.

When the rain fell later, the swami went into the field with the villagers and helped to begin the ploughing. "My very meditation rests on the movement of a farmer's hand," he told his disciples.

From then on, before each meal he recited the Upanishadic words 'annam brahma' and bowed in his heart to the farmers responsible for it.
