Explanation

The last verse of the chapter ends with a striking scene: the Earth laughs like a woman. At whom? At those who sit despondent saying 'ilam', we have nothing. The reason is clear: right under their feet lies land waiting to give food, but they have not ploughed it. This laugh is neither mockery nor cruelty. It is a mother's smile mixed with wonder: 'How much I have; why do they say they have nothing?' The Earth is generous and gives all to the one who works. The inner thought of the verse is that idleness is the true cause of poverty.

The epithet 'nilam ennum nallaal' reflects the Hindu tradition of Bhumi Devi. In our tradition the Earth is a mother, the form of patience and the support of living beings. Rather than doing penance before her, to work on her lap is worship. This gives the verse a deeper meaning. Poverty and want may truly come in life; the verse does not deny them. But it faults stopping at saying 'we have nothing' and not using what is at hand. The way out is to awaken, by labour, the opportunity that lies at our feet.

Reading it as the close of the chapter, there is a completeness. The first verse said that farming is the chief; the last says that the Earth herself mocks one who does not work. In between the farmer's dignity, craft and duty were all stated. So the chapter forms a full circle: farming is to be honoured; idleness is to be scorned.

A story

Prithu and Mother Earth

This is the story of King Prithu told in the Bhagavata Purana and the Vishnu Purana. Prithu, son of Vena, is honoured as the first sovereign. When he ascended the throne the land was in famine. There was no grain and people starved. They came and appealed to Prithu.

Prithu looked at the earth. He learned that the earth was holding back the grains within her. In anger he took up his bow against her. Terrified, the Earth took the form of a cow and fled. He pursued her in every direction. Finally she turned and said: "O King, do not kill me. I am ready to yield grain; but you must level me suitably and milk me as one milks a cow."

Prithu accepted her request. With the tip of his bow he pushed aside mountains and levelled the land. He made water bodies to hold water. He taught people to plough. Then, with a calf, he milked the Earth-cow, that is, the crops. All beings received their food.

The Earth accepted him as father. After Prithu she is called Prithvi. From then on humans learned to live by ploughing and sowing. The Purana presents this as the beginning of agriculture. If the Earth hid her grain, the way is to approach her and obtain it by labour.

The message is clear. If famished people had only lamented 'we have nothing', nothing would have changed. It was when Prithu levelled the land, made water bodies and taught farming that the state of 'nothing' ended. The Earth is generous, but she gives only to those who approach her with labour.
