Explanation

Here the heroine pleads with her own eyes. They remain awake all night, and since sleep does not come, no dream comes either. She begs them: "If you sleep, I will go in the dream and tell him that I am still alive." It is a strange petition, a longing for sleep itself.

"Kayalunkan" means fish-like eyes darkened with kohl. The fish comparison for eyes is very old in Tamil poetry. Those lovely eyes now forget sleep through weeping. In pleading with them, her love and longing show.

"Uyalunmai" is the fact of living. The heroine wants only to tell her lover that her life still stands. Not to complain or to summon him, but simply to announce that she is alive; that is all she thinks needful. In that plainness, her humility and sorrow are visible.

Among commentators, some take "kalandhaar" as one who has been united with her; others as one who was once with her and has parted.

There is a soft irony in the verse as well: the traveller of the dream cannot set out until the eyes obey, so she must persuade the very body that holds her sorrow. It is the first of several verses where she bargains with her own senses. The particle "man" carries a note of a wish unfulfilled, and longing rings strongly in it.

A story

Rukmini's Message and Krishna's Welcome

In the tenth skandha of the Bhagavata Purana comes the story of Rukmini sending word to Krishna. Rukmini, princess of Vidarbha, fell in love with Krishna on hearing of his fame. Her brother Rukmi arranged her marriage to Shishupala. Rukmini was grieved.

She called a trusted Brahmin and sent a letter to Krishna. In that letter she praised his qualities and opened her heart. She wrote that if he did not come and accept her she would give up her life through fasting, and in birth after birth she would strive to gain him alone. The suggestion was that she lived only in the hope of his coming.

When the Brahmin reached Dwaraka, Krishna received him with honour. He gave him food and a seat and asked the reason for his coming. On reading the letter, the Purana says, Krishna was glad, and he set out at once in his chariot for Vidarbha.

The story has been retold since the Bhagavata in later commentaries and dramas, and many poets have sung the beauty of that letter.

The feeling of the verse sounds clearly here. The heroine wishes for a messenger to tell that she lives; Rukmini too sent word of her state and asked for help. And we see that the Brahmin who carried the message was received with kindness.
