Explanation

Here the heroine states the foundation of her life. By day he shows no kindness and cannot be seen. But by night the dream brings him, and that dream is what bears up her life. This continues the thought of the previous chapter, where memory bore up life; now the dream takes that place.

In the phrase "nanavinaal nalkaadhavar" a mild complaint can be heard. Though she admits he has shown no kindness, she does not scold him. She loves him enough to see him in dreams. The line "kaandalin undu en uyir" says her whole support in plain words.

A fine truth lies here. Human life does not stand on bodily needs alone; hope, joy and love also hold it up. The dream is one form of these, and so it supports life.

Some commentators take "nalkaadhavar" as one who has gone away and shown no grace; others as one who does not come in person to be seen.

The verse also sets the tone for the next several: the dream is not a fantasy to be scorned, it is a real, if small, source of strength for the one in sorrow. Nanavu is the waking state, and kanavu the vision in sleep. Valluvar has built the chapter on the contrast of these two.

A story

Sita's Hope in Lanka

In the Sundara Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana, after Hanuman meets Sita, a long conversation follows between the two. Sita explains her state. Ravana has set a deadline of two months, and if Rama does not come within it her life will end. Even then, hope runs through her speech.

She tells Hanuman an old saying. Tradition gives its sense as: "One who lives will see happiness even after a hundred years." It was this thought that had kept her alive all those days. The hope that her husband would come one day was her food.

Her state matches that of the heroine of the verse. There is no kindness in the waking world; there is only hope. For Sita it took the form of Trijata's dream and her own memories. By that inner light she stood firm in the midst of suffering.

The Sundara Kanda is read in many Tamil homes in difficult seasons for this very reason: it shows hope enduring in the most hostile place, and so it comforts those whose own waking days are hard. Sita's steadiness there is the quiet model of the heroine's steadiness in the verse.

Seen in this light, the verse is not about a dream only; it is about whatever small light a person keeps in the dark and the faith that lets it burn. Her endurance in captivity is therefore the real heroism of the Sundara Kanda, quieter than any leap over the sea.

The Sundara Kanda shows the strength of hope beautifully here, and so the belief persists that reading it daily brings comfort in sorrow.

As Hanuman prepared to leave, Sita begged, "Tell Rama to come swiftly." This too was another outflow of the hope that was her support.
