Being led by Women

This chapter warns that a man who surrenders his own judgement and sense of duty to infatuation or fear cannot accomplish anything great. Valluvar does not oppose a husband and wife consulting and respecting each other; he insists only that a person must never lose the firmness to take his own clear decisions.

Introduction

This chapter appears in the Natpiyal, the section on friendship and association, in the book of Wealth. After chapters on friends, false friends, folly and shallow learning, Valluvar looks at a weakness that sits inside the mind: sinking so deeply into desire or fear that one loses clarity and misses the great undertakings of life. The phrase that runs through the whole chapter is 'pennaeval seythozhukum aanmai', behaviour that follows another's orders without a decision of one's own.

We should read this chapter carefully and fairly. The same Valluvar, in the household section, praised the wife as the lamp of the home in chapters such as the Worth of a Life Partner, and he wrote that a woman who guards herself, cares for her husband and guards her good name is truly noble. So the aim here is not to lower women. Classical commentators such as Parimelazhagar explain the chapter as a warning for men who forget their duty out of excessive passion for a wife. Many readers today take it as a general lesson, that in no relationship should one lose one's own judgement. The marks of the social world of that age can be seen in the words, but the inner teaching is for everyone.

The ten verses build step by step. The first says that a man who dotes excessively on his wife will not reach a high purpose. The next four describe the consequences: shame, a feeling of inferiority, inability to act and inability to help the worthy. Verses six to nine show the sorrow of losing friends, righteousness and wealth. The tenth ends by contrast: those with lofty aims are free from this folly.

The title itself may sit uneasily with some readers, so let us look closely at it. 'Sedral' means going and 'penvazhi' means by the way shown by a woman. It does not refer to listening to good advice. It points to following anything, good or bad, without examination and without using one's own mind. Our epics and Puranas have many stories of kings who fell because desire or fear took away their clarity, and the sad ends of those stories stand as evidence for the warning in this chapter.

The chapter serves present life too. In marriage, in families, among friends, love and respect and consultation are needed. But we should never hand over the responsibility of the final decision. The chapter praises the person who, without becoming a slave to love, fear or desire, decides with wisdom and righteousness.

Chapter story

The Boons of Dasharatha

This story comes from the Ayodhya Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana.

Dasharatha, king of Ayodhya, was a man of wisdom and valour whose friendship many kings desired. He had three queens: Kausalya, Sumitra and Kaikeyi. For Kaikeyi he had a special fondness. Once, in the war between gods and demons, Kaikeyi accompanied him and saved his life. In gratitude he promised her two boons.

Dasharatha loved all his queens, but he was drawn to the youngest, Kaikeyi, for her beauty and courage. It became his habit to refuse her nothing that she wished. In the court other kings sought his counsel, but the old men of the palace used to whisper that before Kaikeyi, the eyes of his reason grew a little dim.

Many years passed. Dasharatha grew old and decided to crown his eldest son Rama. The whole land rejoiced. At that moment Kaikeyi's maid Manthara planted doubts in her mind, and Kaikeyi began to think that her own son Bharata should be king and Rama should go to the forest.

At night Dasharatha came to Kaikeyi's palace. He was startled to find her lying on the floor with her hair unbound. "What do you desire? If you ask, I will give even my life," he said, binding himself by an oath in the excess of his love. Before he had finished speaking, as if she had been waiting for his word, Kaikeyi asked for the two boons: Bharata's coronation, and fourteen years of forest exile for Rama.

Dasharatha was shattered. His eyes went dark. "I cannot live without Rama," he cried. But he had given his word already. Without first inquiring, and moved only by fondness, he had spoken, and now he had to bear the consequence.

Grief spread through the palace. Great elders such as Vasishtha and the minister Sumantra advised Dasharatha and begged him to change his word. But for one who has given his word there is no other way. Rama himself said, "My father's word must not fail," and humbly set out for the forest. Sita and Lakshmana went with him.

Rama gladly went to the forest to keep his father's word. Dasharatha, unable to bear separation from his son, gave up his life.

It was not wrong that the king loved his queen. But he gave his word without reflection, and so lost his duty and righteousness. The tale shows that one who gives up clear thought to the bonds of attachment will in the end suffer himself, and make his family and kingdom suffer.

Key lessons

  • Even with love and desire, one must always preserve the clarity to decide for oneself.
  • One who merely acts at another's bidding cannot accomplish great things.
  • Fear and excessive attachment cost one friends, righteousness and wealth.
  • Respect and consultation are needed in a relationship, but the final responsibility is our own.
  • People with lofty aims do not fall by losing themselves.
