Explanation

This verse speaks of Lakshmi's dwelling as the fruit of hospitality. In the house of one who welcomes the good guest with a bright face, says Valluvar, Seyyaal, the goddess of wealth, will dwell gladly.

'Seyyaal' is Lakshmi. She is said to be so called because of her red-gold colour. In Tamil the goddess is called Seyyaval, Thamaraiyaal and Sri. Here Valluvar says 'agan amarndhu uraiyum', she dwells with a glad heart.

'Mukan amarndhu' is with a bright face. It stresses that giving with a cheerful face matters more than giving the food. The same word occurs in 'agan amarndhu' for the inner side: both heart and face must be glad together.

For 'nalvirundhu' there are two readings, the good guest or the good meal. But the emphasis of the verse is on the cheerful face. More than what kind of food it is, what matters is the mind with which it is given.

The house where Lakshmi stays is not only a house full of wealth but one full of heart. In the Hindu tradition there is a belief that the goddess dwells where there is cleanliness, peace, virtue and generosity. Every such saying agrees with Valluvar's idea.

We can also feel its opposite: a feast given with a frown and unwillingly drives Lakshmi away. So the deep lesson of this verse is that the state of mind comes before the act.

The story of Charumati from the Varalakshmi Vratam tradition is a sweet symbol of this verse.

A story

Charumati and Varalakshmi

The story of the Varalakshmi Vratam is told in works such as the Skanda Purana. Goddess Parvati asked Lord Shiva, "What is the best vow for women to observe?" Shiva spoke of the greatness of the Varalakshmi Vratam and told the story of a woman named Charumati.

In the city of Kundina in Magadha lived a young woman named Charumati. She served her husband with great devotion, looked after her father-in-law and mother-in-law, and welcomed anyone who came to her house with a bright face. Her heart was always full of devotion to God.

One night Lakshmi appeared in Charumati's dream. "Charumati, I admire your good qualities. On the Friday before the full moon of the month of Shravana, worship me as Varalakshmi. I shall grant you the boons you need," she said. When Charumati awoke she told her family. They were glad.

When the day came she invited the other women of the town as well. All sat together, set up the kalasha and worshipped the goddess. She welcomed each one with a bright face, and gave sweets and betel. When the worship ended, wealth and wellbeing began to grow in their homes, says the tale.

Each of the women observed the vow in her own home too. As a result they gained children and wealth. This vow continues from generation to generation. Even today, in the month of Shravana, Varalakshmi worship is held in many homes in South India. It is also the custom to invite neighbouring women and give them betel.

In this tale the house where Lakshmi dwelt was Charumati's. The reason was that she had love, humility and hospitality. The story shows that a house full of heart rather than wealth is dear to the goddess.

That is also the essence of the verse: in the house that welcomes those who come with a bright face, Lakshmi dwells gladly.

To reflect on

Does my welcome reach my face, or only my words?
