Explanation

In this verse Valluvar sees hospitality as a sacrifice (velvi). A velvi is a Vedic yajna. Its fruit depends on the devotion of the doer, the offerings and the worth of the recipient. The same is true of the fruit of the sacrifice of hospitality.

'Inaiththunaiththu enbadhu ondru illai' means one cannot say it is so much. That is, the fruit of hospitality has no fixed limit. It does not mean that even a small help gives great fruit if it goes to a great guest, and small fruit if it goes to a humble one.

'Virundhin thunaiththunai' means in proportion to the guest's nature. Parimelazhagar takes it as: the fruit is as great as the worth of the guest who came. By this, the fruit of serving a guest high in knowledge and austerity is great.

This verse must be read with care. It is not said to make distinctions between high and low guests. To honour anyone who comes to the door is virtue. But the verse shows that if the guest is of high worth, the fruit of service to him grows.

Another reading is also given: the more in need the guest is, the more truly hungry, the higher the fruit of the feast. When food does not go waste but answers real hunger, it becomes a full sacrifice.

We see this in the help we give in life too. Help given at the right time to the right person bears more fruit.

Above all, if God himself comes as the guest, how high is the fruit! The story of Mahabali welcoming Vamana is the picture of it.

A story

Mahabali and Vamana

The eighth book of the Bhagavata Purana tells the story of Mahabali. Though born in the asura line, Mahabali was a grandson of Prahlada and of good character. By his strength he conquered all three worlds and took heaven from Indra. He performed a great sacrifice to establish his rule.

Indra and the other gods appealed to Vishnu. Vishnu took birth as Vamana, a dwarf brahmin boy. He came to the place where Mahabali's sacrifice was being held. Seeing him come with an umbrella, a water-pot and a deerskin, Mahabali rose and welcomed him.

"What do you want? Gold, a town, elephants?" asked Mahabali. Vamana smiled and said, "Three paces of land measured by my own feet are enough."

Then the guru of the asuras, Shukracharya, stopped him. "Mahabali, this is no ordinary boy. This is Vishnu. He has come to take all your wealth. Do not give your word," he warned. Mahabali reflected. "Master, if the Lord himself has come to beg of me, what greater good fortune can I have? I shall not break my word once given," he said.

When he came to pour the water of gift, Shukracharya entered the mouth of the water vessel as a bee to try to block it. Vamana poked it with a blade of darbha grass and the guru lost an eye, the tale says. Mahabali completed the gift.

At that instant Vamana took the cosmic form. With one step he measured the earth and with another the heavens. When he asked, "Where is room for the third step?", Mahabali bowed and said, "Place it on my head." Vamana placed his foot on his head and sent him to the world of Sutala.

The life of Mahabali, who gave everything to the Lord who came as a guest, is the highest fruit of the sacrifice of hospitality.

To reflect on

If a guest came with great need or great worth, would I rise as willingly as for any other?
