Mahabharata, Adi ParvaBhishma's Vow
From the Mahabharata, Adi Parva. King Shantanu wished to marry Satyavati, daughter of the fisher chief. Her father set a condition: "Only my daughter's children shall rule." Since there was already a crown prince, Devavrata, the king sank into sorrow.
Seeing his father's grief, Devavrata went himself to the fisher chief. "I give up the throne," he said. When asked, "But might your children claim it?", he vowed, "I will never marry, all my life."
Flowers rained from the sky, and the gods hailed him "Bhishma!", the one of the terrible vow. The delighted Shantanu granted him the boon of dying only when he chose. Bhishma never forgot that nobility of conduct all his life.
