Mahabharata, Sabha ParvaYudhishthira's Game of Dice
From the Mahabharata, Sabha Parva. After the Rajasuya sacrifice, on Shakuni's advice, Duryodhana invited Yudhishthira to a game of dice. Though he walked the path of dharma, Yudhishthira had a weakness for dice, and accepted, saying he would not refuse a challenge.
Shakuni rolled the dice, and Yudhishthira lost every round. Wealth, chariots, army, kingdom, then his brothers, himself, and finally Draupadi, he staked and lost them all. Each loss only stirred the hope, "I will win it back in the next round."
In a single day a great emperor became a slave. The thirteen years of exile and the great war that followed were all the fruit of that one day of gambling. It is proof that dice can bring down even one who knows dharma.
