Srimad Bhagavatam, Fourth CantoDhruva, the Pole Star
From the Srimad Bhagavatam, Fourth Canto. The boy Dhruva, son of King Uttanapada, tried to sit on his father's lap. His stepmother Suruchi pulled him away and mocked him: "If you want this place, pray to God for it."
Weeping, the five-year-old went to the forest. Narada tried to send him home, but Dhruva would not waver. With the mantra Narada taught him, he did severe penance in Madhuvana, reducing his food month by month until at last he stood on one leg.
Vishnu appeared and touched his cheek with his conch. He granted him a place that was steady and imperishable. The Pole Star that stands unmoving in the sky to this day is the sign of that boy who never fell from his resolve.
