Mahabharata, Vana ParvaThe Yaksha's Lake
From the Mahabharata, Vana Parva. Near the end of their exile, the Pandavas were weary and thirsty, and Nakula went to fetch water. He found a clear lake.
As he bent to drink, a voice rang out: "This is my lake. Answer my questions, then drink." In his thirst Nakula ignored the warning and drank, and fell lifeless at once. Sahadeva, Arjuna and Bhima came after him, did the same and fell.
At last Yudhishthira came. Even seeing his brothers lying there, he respected the warning and answered the Yaksha's questions wisely, one by one. Pleased, the Yaksha revealed himself as Dharma Deva and restored all the brothers to life. The one who approached the water with restraint saved them all.
