Mahabharata, Vana ParvaThe Sage Mudgala's Grain
From the Mahabharata, Vana Parva. At Kurukshetra lived the sage Mudgala with his family. He lived on the grain left in the fields after harvest, gleaned with his own hands, and never held out his hand to anyone. Every fortnight he fed guests with the grain he had gathered and ate what remained.
To test him, the sage Durvasa, famous for his temper, came six times and ate all the food Mudgala had gathered. Mudgala served him joyfully, without the least disturbance of mind. Durvasa was pleased and blessed him.
The gods sent a celestial chariot to take him to heaven. Mudgala asked about heaven's flaws, declined it and sought liberation instead. To one who lived on the food of his own labour, even heaven seemed small.
