those who spread slander
are like Death itself

Explanation

Those who spread slander about others, says Avvaiyar, are like Death itself. Slander kills a person's honour and sometimes destroys a whole life.

Though Avvaiyar's words are framed about women, they apply to anyone who spreads slander. Words are stronger than swords, so they must be used with care.

Mahabharata, Sabha and Karna Parvas

Karna's Cruel Words and Their Price

From the Mahabharata. When Draupadi was dragged into the hall of dice, Karna spoke of her with contempt. Slandering her as a woman with no honour because she had five husbands, he even urged that her garment be stripped from her. Those words tore at her heart.

Years later at Kurukshetra, Karna's chariot wheel sank into the earth. He called out to Arjuna that by dharma an unarmed man must not be struck. Krishna asked, 'Where was your dharma when you slandered Draupadi in the assembly?'

Karna bowed his head and could not answer. The slander he had spoken came back to him in the hour of his end.
