Thaayir siranthathoru koayilum illai

Meaning

There is no temple greater than one's mother.

Word by word

greater than a mother
any temple
there is none

Explanation

There is no temple greater than one's mother, says Avvaiyar. We seek God in temples, but a mother is the first form of God's love. Her sacrifice, patience and kindness are divine.

Honouring and serving one's mother is like circling a temple in worship; hurting her is like desecrating one.

Shankara Digvijaya (life of Adi Shankara)

Shankara Keeps His Promise to His Mother

From the life of Adi Shankara. The young Shankara wished to become a renunciate, but his widowed mother Aryamba would not allow it. One day, while he was bathing in the river, a crocodile seized his leg. 'If you give me leave to renounce, I will live,' he said. His mother agreed, and the crocodile let go.

Before leaving he promised her, 'Wherever you are, I will come to you at your last hour.' Many years later, sensing that her end was near, he returned to her side.

The townsfolk objected that a renunciate must not perform funeral rites, and no one would help. Shankara performed his mother's last rites alone. Even one who had renounced the world could not renounce the temple that is a mother.

To reflect on

Could you spend a few minutes today with your mother, or with her memory?
