give alms first

then eat

Explanation

If you have enough, says Avvaiyar, first give to others and then eat. This is a basic virtue of our tradition: setting aside a share for those who have none before we eat.

The Bhagavad Gita says the same: those who eat what remains after offering are freed from sin, while those who cook only for themselves eat sin (3.13).

Periya Puranam, life of Karaikkal Ammaiyar

Karaikkal Ammaiyar's Mango

From the Periya Puranam. Punithavathiyar of Karaikkal was deeply devoted to Shiva. One day her husband Paramadattan sent home two mangoes. Just then a hungry devotee of Shiva arrived. Only rice was ready, so she fed him lovingly and gave him one of the mangoes too.

When her husband came to eat, she served him the other mango. Delighted by its taste, he asked for the second. With nothing left to give, she prayed to Shiva, and a divine mango appeared in her hand.

Later she asked the Lord for the form of a ghostly devotee and was called 'Mother' by Shiva himself. Her life is the very image of giving first and eating after.

To reflect on

Before you eat today, could you set aside a share for someone?
