Explanation

The lazy, says Avvaiyar, will wander in distress. Opportunities pass by one who will not work. Later he wanders about lamenting his state.

Laziness does not come in a day; it grows through small postponements of 'I'll do it tomorrow'. The cure is to begin today.

Valmiki Ramayana, Uttara and Yuddha Kandas

Kumbhakarna's Sleep

From the Valmiki Ramayana. Kumbhakarna, Ravana's brother, had enormous strength. He too performed fierce penance and stood before Brahma to ask for a boon. But at the gods' plea, Saraswati sat on his tongue, and instead of what he meant to ask, he asked for long sleep.

After that he would sleep for six months and wake for only a day. Even when great danger came to Lanka, he was asleep. When at last he was roused with enormous effort, the war had already slipped out of control.

He gave his brother good counsel, fought bravely and fell. But his great strength had been wasted in sleep. His life shows how high the price of sloth can be.

To reflect on

Could you spend five minutes today starting a task you keep putting off until 'tomorrow'?
