Explanation

If you seek prosperity, says Avvaiyar, seek the plough: honour farming. Food is the foundation of all wealth. Without farming, even palaces would go hungry.

Thiruvalluvar too praises it: only those who live by the plough truly live (Kural 1033). Even today, every grain on our plate is a farmer's labour.

Srimad Bhagavatam, Book 4

King Prithu and the Earth

From the Srimad Bhagavatam. In ancient times, the earth hid all her produce within herself, and people wasted with hunger. King Prithu took up his bow and pursued the earth, who fled in the form of a cow, until at last she stopped and spoke to him.

'Do not kill me,' she said. 'Level the land and give me a calf, and I will give milk and feed everyone.' Prithu levelled the land, founded villages and towns and began farming. He 'milked' grains from the earth.

The Bhagavatam says that the earth came to be called Prithvi after him. The wealth of the world began at the tip of the plough.

To reflect on

When you eat today, could you think for a moment of the farmer who grew your food?
