Valmiki Ramayana, Bala KandaDasharatha's Prayer for Sons
From the Valmiki Ramayana. Dasharatha, king of Ayodhya, ruled by dharma. He had every kind of wealth but one lack: he had no heir. His heart withered at the thought that the line of Ikshvaku would end with him.
On Vasishtha's advice, he performed the horse sacrifice and the putrakameshti sacrifice for sons, conducted by the sage Rishyasringa. From the sacrificial fire a divine being rose and gave him a golden vessel full of sweet payasam, which Dasharatha shared among his three queens.
To them were born Rama, Bharata, Lakshmana and Shatrughna. The line not only continued; it blossomed into the story of Rama that the whole world honours.
