Explanation

Learning is truer wealth than money in hand, says Avvaiyar. Money shrinks when spent; thieves may take it and floods may wash it away. Learning grows the more it is given, and no one can take it from you.

Thiruvalluvar says the same: learning is the imperishable wealth; other riches are not true wealth (Kural 400).

Brihadaranyaka Upanishad

Maitreyi's Question

From the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad. The sage Yajnavalkya decided to leave household life and become a renunciate. He offered to divide his wealth between his two wives, Katyayani and Maitreyi.

Maitreyi asked, 'If this whole earth full of wealth were mine, would it make me immortal?' 'No,' said the sage. 'Your life would be like the life of the rich. There is no hope of immortality through wealth.'

'What would I do with something that cannot make me immortal?' said Maitreyi. 'Tell me what you know.' Delighted, Yajnavalkya taught her the knowledge of the Self. She set wealth aside and chose the true wealth.
