Koal sevik kuralai kaarrutan neruppu

Meaning

Tale-bearing to a willing ear is fire fanned by wind.

Word by word

an ear that listens to tales
tale-bearing
together with wind
is fire

Explanation

Tale-bearing joined to an ear that listens, says Avvaiyar, is like fire joined with wind: it spreads and destroys. The tale-bearer is the fire; the one who listens and believes is the wind. Together they can burn down a family or a whole land.

Not carrying tales is one duty; not listening to them is another.

Valmiki Ramayana, Uttara Kanda

The Whispers of Ayodhya

From the Valmiki Ramayana, Uttara Kanda. During Rama's reign, he once asked his friend Bhadra, 'What do the people say about me?' Bhadra answered hesitantly: 'Everyone praises you. But some speak of your taking back Sita, who had lived in Ravana's city.'

That slander against Sita, whose purity had been proven in the ordeal of fire, had spread like wind through the mouths of the town. Under the weight of his royal duty, and with a heavy heart, Rama decided to send Sita to the forest.

The talk of a few, spreading through the ears of many, separated a pure family. It is a sorrowful witness to how cruel the fire of gossip can be.

To reflect on

When someone brings you gossip about another, how do you respond?
