Explanation

Holding anger in check, says Avvaiyar, is the grace of austerity. However fierce one's penance, a moment of anger can burn up its fruit. In the Puranas, many sages lost the power of their austerities through anger.

Restraining anger is not weakness; it is great strength. True austerity lies not in tormenting the body but in mastering the mind.

Srimad Bhagavatam, Book 10

Bhrigu Tests the Gods

From the Srimad Bhagavatam. To learn which of the three great gods was greatest, the sages sent the sage Bhrigu. Bhrigu went to Brahma and deliberately showed no respect; Brahma grew angry. At Kailash he slighted Shiva too, and Shiva rose in anger.

Then he went to Vaikuntha, where Vishnu lay resting, and kicked him on the chest. Vishnu rose at once, without anger, bowed to the sage and gently pressed his foot, saying, 'Your tender foot must have been hurt by my hard chest.'

Seeing this patience, the sages understood that Vishnu was the height of sattva, pure goodness. His mastery of anger was his greatness.

To reflect on

Think of a recent moment you became angry. Could you have met it differently?
