Explanation

If you are always looking for faults, says Avvaiyar, you will have no kin left. Everyone has some flaw. If we hunt for it and magnify it, no relationship can last.

For a relationship to live, it needs a heart that bears with others and forgives. Seeing the good rather than the flaw is the life of every bond.

Srimad Bhagavatam, Book 4

Daksha's Sacrifice

From the Srimad Bhagavatam. The patriarch Daksha kept finding fault with his son-in-law, Shiva. Once, in an assembly, he grew furious that Shiva did not rise to honour him, and cursed him, mocking him as one who roams cremation grounds smeared with ash.

Later, when Daksha held a great sacrifice, he did not invite Shiva. When his daughter Sati came uninvited, he insulted her too. Unable to bear her father's contempt for her husband, Sati gave up her body. Shiva's fierce form Virabhadra destroyed the sacrifice.

Daksha, who saw only faults, lost both son-in-law and daughter. Later he repented and begged Shiva's forgiveness.

To reflect on

With someone whose faults you often notice, could you find and name one good quality today?
