Valmiki Ramayana, Ayodhya KandaRama's Sandals and Bharata
From the Valmiki Ramayana. Rama was famed for never speaking twice: once he had said a thing, he did not take it back. To keep his father's word, he accepted fourteen years in the forest.
At Chitrakuta, Bharata, the queen mothers, the ministers and the people came and begged him in tears to return and rule. Bharata even said he would lie fasting until Rama came back. But Rama would not go against his father's word.
At last Bharata took Rama's sandals, placed them on the throne and ruled in Rama's name. It stands as a witness to an elder brother who kept his word and a younger brother who honoured it.
