Explanation

Envious talk, says Avvaiyar, ruins one's own prosperity. One who cannot bear another's rise will speak ill of them. That talk harms the speaker more than anyone: the mind fills with bitterness and time that should be spent working is wasted.

Thiruvalluvar says the same: prosperity does not stay with the envious (Kural 135).

Mahabharata, Sabha Parva

Duryodhana in Maya's Hall

From the Mahabharata, Sabha Parva. After the Rajasuya sacrifice, Duryodhana toured the wondrous hall Maya had built at Indraprastha. Taking a crystal floor for water, he lifted his garments; taking a pool for solid floor, he fell into it. Bhima and others who saw it laughed.

Returning in humiliation, Duryodhana poured out his envy to his father about the Pandavas' wealth and fame. 'I will have no peace until their wealth is mine,' he said. That envy became the seed of the dice game, and finally of the Kurukshetra war and the ruin of his whole clan.

His envious talk brought him no prosperity, only destruction.
