Kondrai Vendhan 16 ·

Kittaathaayin vettena mara

Meaning

If it cannot be had, forget it at once.

Word by word

if it cannot be had
at once, cleanly
மற
forget it

Explanation

If you know something cannot be had, says Avvaiyar, cut it out of your mind and forget it at once. Pining for what is out of reach eats up time and peace, and sometimes drags us onto wrong paths.

The word vettena matters: not little by little, but cleanly, in one decision. That is freedom for the mind.

Valmiki Ramayana, Aranya Kanda

Shurpanakha Would Not Let Go

From the Valmiki Ramayana. At Panchavati, Ravana's sister Shurpanakha was infatuated with Rama and asked him to marry her. Rama refused, saying he was married, and Lakshmana refused too.

Though it was clear she could not have what she wanted, she would not let go. Thinking Sita was the obstacle, she sprang to attack her, and Lakshmana punished her. Humiliated, she ran to Khara and then to Ravana and stoked their anger. That led to Sita's abduction and, in the end, to the ruin of Lanka.

Had she cut away what was out of reach and forgotten it, a great catastrophe would have been avoided.
