Explanation

Without good company, says Avvaiyar, trouble follows. We become like those we spend time with. The company of the good raises us; the company of the wicked drags us down.

Thiruvalluvar says the same: as water changes with the soil it flows through, a person's understanding changes with their company (Kural 452).

Srimad Bhagavatam, Book 7

Prahlada Learned in the Womb

From the Srimad Bhagavatam. While Hiranyakashipu was away doing penance, the gods attacked the city of the asuras, and Indra seized his queen Kayadhu, who was with child. The sage Narada stopped him and took her to his hermitage to protect her.

While she stayed there, Narada taught her about dharma and devotion, and the child in her womb heard it too. That child was Prahlada.

Though he was born and raised in the palace of the asuras, he grew into a great devotee, against even his father's opposition. The good company he received in the womb guided him all his life.
