Explanation

To melt on hearing songs of Murugan is a blessing. The poet asks us to remind those who have lost it of the pain of death's road; not to frighten them, but to wake them.

From the Nakkeerar tradition and Thirumurugatruppadai

Nakkeerar in the cave

The Sangam poet Nakkeerar was performing Shiva puja beside a pond when his attention wavered for a moment. Because of it the bhuta Karkimukhi seized him and shut him in a cave where nine hundred and ninety-nine others were already held; when there were a thousand, it meant to devour them. Nakkeerar sang the Thirumurugatruppadai in praise of Murugan. Murugan's spear came, destroyed the bhuta and freed them all.
