Meaning

Like the grace of him who hurled his spear upon the roaring, surging sea, which comes to help anywhere: will the gold you keep without giving to those who ask, your lovely house and your women come with you on that lonely road where the life departs? You will be ruined!

Explanation

The Lord's grace comes to help everywhere; we should give in the same way. Nothing we cling to comes with us on the last journey; only what we have given does.

From the life of Valmiki

Ratnakara's question

Ratnakara supported his family by highway robbery. One day he waylaid Narada. Narada calmly asked, 'Will your family share in the sins you commit? Go and ask them.' He ran home and asked. 'Providing for us is your duty, not ours; the sin is yours alone,' they said. Shaken, Ratnakara fell at Narada's feet. Chanting the name of Rama, he meditated until an anthill covered him, and became the sage Valmiki.
