Meaning

I have not thought of you; I have not served you today; I have not worshipped your small feet with their anklets; I have not praised you at all; I have not met the Lord who rides the peacock; I have not condemned falsehood; I have not lived out the truth. What have I done to remove the suffering of mind and body?

Explanation

The ending '-ilen', 'I have not', rings again and again: seven failings. This is not self-abasement but honest self-examination, which is where change begins.

From the life of Purandara Dasa

The nose ring

Srinivasa Nayaka was very rich but a miser. A poor Brahmin begged him for help for days and got nothing. The Brahmin went to his wife, and she gave him her nose ring. That very nose ring was brought to Nayaka's shop to be pawned. Furious, he went home and demanded to see her nose ring. As she prayed in fear, the same nose ring miraculously appeared in her cup. Realising the Brahmin was the Lord himself, Nayaka gave up everything and became Purandara Dasa.
