Meaning

The verse reads like a scene from a debate. 'You belittled the glory of the wise one of ripe knowledge who surpassed even the gods. Now tell me: who entered the heart of the Goddess seated on the lotus?' When this is asked, will you name the three gods, or the Lord whom the Alvar of Kurugur praises? Answer that first!

Explanation

On whose chest does Sri dwell? Vaishnava tradition takes this as the sign of the Supreme; 'the beloved of Sri' is a name of Thirumal. Kambar puts this question to those who do not honour the Alvar: tell me who the Supreme is, and then you will see the Alvar's greatness.

This is a debating verse. But its aim is not to belittle other gods; it is to state the certainty of the path the Alvar showed.

Srimad Bhagavatam, Book 10, Chapter 89

Bhrigu Tests the Three Gods

From the Srimad Bhagavatam. When sages were holding a sacrifice on the bank of the Sarasvati, a question arose: 'Of Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu, who is the highest?' To find out, they sent the sage Bhrigu.

Bhrigu first went to his own father Brahma and stood without bowing. Brahma grew angry but held it in, since Bhrigu was his son. Next he went to Kailasa; when Shiva came to embrace him with love, Bhrigu pushed him away. Shiva raised his trident in anger, and Parvati stopped him. Last, Bhrigu went to Vaikuntha. There Vishnu lay asleep with his head in the lap of Sri, and Bhrigu kicked him on the chest.

Vishnu rose, bowed to Bhrigu and stroked his foot, asking, 'O sage, did your tender foot not hurt when it struck my hard chest? This chest your foot has touched will now be Sri's lasting home.' The Bhagavatam says Bhrigu returned to the sages in tears and told them: 'The one full of patience and love is the Supreme.'

To reflect on

A person's true greatness shows in how they act when they have every reason to be angry. Where have you seen this?
