Meaning

I, burdened with karma, never had the blessing of touching and holding his holy feet and asking him for what I longed for! He is the holy one who showed his form in the sacred Tamil land of the Pandyas, rich with lovely waters. Could I not have been born, in this empty life, in those very years when he lived, as one who loved him?

Explanation

This is a moving longing. Kambar was born many centuries after Nammalvar and knew him only through his songs. 'If I had been born in his time,' he longs, 'I would have touched his feet, as Madhurakavi did.'

This longing is shared by all devotees. But Vaishnava tradition offers comfort: the Alvar's songs are his very form, and to hold to them is to hold his feet.

Srimad Bhagavatam, Book 10, Chapter 38

Akrura Rolls in Krishna's Footprints

From the Srimad Bhagavatam. Kamsa sent Akrura to Gokulam. Kamsa's purpose was evil, but Akrura was a devotee of Krishna. All along the road, as he rode in his chariot, his heart was full of joy and longing.

'Will I see him today? Will I touch those feet the yogis meditate on? Will a sinner like me have that blessing? Will he place his lotus hand on my head?' So he thought as he went.

Reaching Gokulam at evening, he saw Krishna's footprints in the dust, marked with the signs of the lotus, conch and discus. At the sight he leapt from the chariot and rolled in that dust, weeping, 'This is the dust of my Lord's feet!' Even before he saw Krishna, his footprints alone gave Akrura great bliss. For Kambar, who was not born in the Alvar's time, the songs the Alvar left behind are those footprints.

To reflect on

How have you come to know a great person you could never meet, through what they left behind?
