Markandeya Purana (the story of Anasuya and Shilavati)The Night That Would Not End
From Puranic tradition. Shilavati, a woman of great virtue, had a sick husband named Kaushika. One night, as she carried him, his foot brushed against the sage Mandavya in the dark. The sage cursed him: 'When the sun rises, you will die.'
By the power of her virtue Shilavati commanded: 'Then the sun shall not rise!' And the sun did not rise. Days passed; the world sank into darkness. Sacrifices stopped and the gods were distressed. Darkness hung everywhere like smoke.
The gods went to Anasuya, wife of the sage Atri. Anasuya spoke lovingly to Shilavati and promised: 'Let the sun rise; I will bring your husband back to life.' Shilavati agreed. The sun rose, Kaushika fell, and by the power of her tapas Anasuya restored him to life. Even the longest darkness ends one day, but it needs someone full of grace. Kambar says the Alvar's name is that dawn.
