Explanation

The phrase 'thannuyir thaan arap pettraanai' receives two kinds of sense. One: one who has completely removed attachment to his own life and ego. The other: one who has completely known himself or conquered himself. Both go in the same direction: all other beings worship the one who has conquered himself.

'Enaiya mannuyir ellaam' means all the other beings of the world. That all living beings worship him is a natural occurrence among us. A person who does not put his own good first but thinks of good for all comes to be respected by others without their even noticing it. Without insistence he attains a quiet leadership.

Conquering oneself is no easy act. There may be a few who conquer the world, but those who conquer their own anger, desire and pride are rare. That victory cannot be won in any battle. It is possible only through tapas and steady practice, which is why the couplet appears in the chapter on tapas.

In today's world we seek fame and power. But those who win real respect in people's hearts are those who correct themselves and live with restraint. That humility and self-mastery is the highest fruit of tapas. Ego controls us more subtly than we think.

A story

Bhishma's Vow

The story of Bhishma is told in the Adi Parva of the Mahabharata. He was the prince Devavrata, son of the Ganga and of King Shantanu. Shantanu wished to marry Satyavati, the daughter of a fisher chief. Her father, however, laid down a condition: 'Only my daughter's sons must rule.' Since the eldest son, Devavrata, existed, this could not be, and Shantanu was grieved.

Seeing his father's sorrow, Devavrata learned the cause and went straight to the fisher chief. 'I give up my claim to the throne,' he said. The chief replied, 'Even if you give it up, your children may claim it.' Devavrata found a remedy even for that. 'I shall never marry; I shall remain celibate all my life,' he vowed. At that moment flowers rained from the sky, and the gods cried 'Bhishma! Bhishma!' 'Bhishma' means one who has taken a terrible vow; from that day he was called Bhishma.

He gave up the pleasures of youth and the right to the throne for his father's happiness, and stood firm in that resolve all his life. He restrained his own good for the sake of others'. As the eldest of the Kuru house, he guided three generations with authority. People of the realm all respected him for his freedom from desire.

When he fell on a bed of arrows in the Kurukshetra war, both sides came to see him. Having the boon of choosing the hour of his own death, he waited for the sun's northward course. In those days everyone, Krishna included, paid him reverence. Yudhishthira heard from him teachings on kingship, dharma and liberation, which survive as the Shanti Parva and Anushasana Parva.

The true meaning of 'one who has mastered his own self' can be seen in Bhishma.
