Explanation

Valluvar does not deny that wealth gained by theft can look as though it is growing. The phrase alavirandhu aavadhu pola describes a seeming of growth beyond measure. The word pola, "as if", is the key: it is not real growth, only the appearance of it. The couplet then states firmly that such wealth will perish.

Commentators point to several reasons. Stolen wealth has no foundation; around it stand the grief of the person robbed, the fear of the law and the hatred of neighbours. The anxiety of guarding it comes along with it, so even with riches there is no peace. Some read "perishing" to include not only the loss of the goods but the ruin of the holder's name, family and good character.

In practice we do see that a small fortune built by honest work lasts for a long time, while a large one gathered by deceit can collapse without warning. The verse asks us to prefer steady earnings to quick ones. Even if honest gain comes a little late, it is the safer road. That is Valluvar's settled view.

The truth of the verse can be seen in history and in life. Rulers and merchants who seized people's wealth by trickery sometimes flourished for a while and then fell. A common saying holds that wealth got by wrong means runs off like water. The thief has no sense of safety; fear of exposure is his daily companion. So "perishes" may be understood not only as ruin but as the loss of peace.

A story

Duryodhana's Wealth Won by Dice

The Sabha Parva of the Mahabharata tells of a great game of dice. The Pandavas had performed the Rajasuya sacrifice at Indraprastha and stood in great prosperity. Seeing it, Duryodhana burned with envy. His uncle Shakuni advised that by his dice trickery he could win the Pandavas' wealth and kingdom. Dhritarashtra hesitated, but out of love for his son he allowed the game.

Yudhishthira, drawn by the passion for the game, lost his wealth, his brothers, his kingdom, himself, and at last Draupadi. Through Shakuni's loaded dice, immense riches piled up for Duryodhana, and Indraprastha came into his hands. He rejoiced in that victory, and his greatness seemed to swell beyond measure.

But that victory had not come by a just path. The insult done in the assembly, the protest of elders such as Bhishma, Drona and Vidura, and Draupadi's tears settled upon that wealth like a curse. After the thirteen years of forest exile and the year of concealment, and after various attempts at peace, Duryodhana still refused to give the Pandavas their share. In the end, at the war of Kurukshetra, he and his hundred brothers fell, and the wealth and kingdom won by foul means perished with him.

The Mahabharata thus becomes the greatest illustration of the couplet: "Wealth gained by theft seems to swell, yet perishes." Vyasa does not show the tale to encourage vengeance, but to show how greed, deceit and pride can destroy a family and a country. It reminds us that no matter how hard one tries, what is gained by dishonest means does not last.
